Because it was a village called Zhombe and was in Zimbabwe, arrived, From the alphabet, at the end of the world. This was the best professional decision I made ever.

In 1991, I was appointed by the San Francisco company for Major Wall Street (since I ended) while completing the Master of Business Administration in Evening Finance.

By working with government bond sellers (they were all men), my declared job was administrative support. My real job was to watch, listen and learn.

Two years later, degree At hand, I was promoted to the position of an analyst at their headquarters in New York. Thus, I was on my way …

Wall Street was early in the mid -1990s following the introduction of the previous contract of Gordon Jiko and benefited from purchases to public discourse, before the enchanting height and the fall of the point.

Wall Stars was not considered “good men.”

But then, there was a degree of general magic with prominent characters.

And money, of course. (Many less than now, but still …)

Therefore, you can imagine that when I pulled the risk after four years in Manhattan and joined Peace CorpsThere were questions.

What was I thinking?

It was the best professional decision I made ever.

I did not like the effectiveness of my profession in the investment bank. But I had no special affection for that.

I enjoyed the salary, clearly, but it was not enough to compensate for that familiar number Sunday night ennuiOr even dread when you realize that you are on the threshold of another work week.

So why is the Peace Legion?

I knew I wanted to travel. Not only for vacation, but to live abroad for a long time.

I had a wide interest in the economies of developing countries. But that's all I know. I had no practical experience in any of this.

I did not know what kind of jobs I wanted or even who might be an appropriate employer.

I solved the mystery by finding a “business owner” that examined my basic fund – the opportunity to work abroad in a wide -scale job associated with economic development.

The comparison was that I will not receive wages, which is an unconventional option in the mid -thirties.

I was lucky. A few years in an investment bank means that I can afford costs Fracture of paid work.

My new “profession”

By working in a United Nations non -governmental organization, my job was to advise new project owners while they were establishing their business.

The most important lesson you learned was that P&L phrases and specialized marketing strategies had a very little relationship with business success.

Instead, it was the meeting of political conspiracies, macroeconomics and social standards that prompted the results of developing companies.

The Peace Corps followed another round immediately graduate school. Then, finally, a 18 -year -old profession as an external service officer.

This profession had not occurred without carrying out the initial investment in the Peace Corps.

These two years in Zimbabwe gave me the information I need to reveal the specific aspect of international economic development that could be mine passion.

I provided “evidence of the concept” that I can enjoy in a sleeping country.

In Zimbabwe, I understood who are the different players in the “industry” of international development and where my skills will suit better.

I think the general lines of my experience, if not the details, are widely repeated.

The biggest obstacle to making a file Job switching It can be a very understandable coercion that you need to know exactly how the next chapter will look before it dives.

Inability to express completely that the future state can easily lead to paralysis.

It is clear that he became a volunteer in the Peace Corps will not be my next career. Instead, I specified the next step that responded to the two things that I knew.

I used the information I gained at the Witti station in Zimbabwe to determine where to go after that.

Financial aspects

Personal financing part of my experience is also generalized.

Although fully recognized that I got a great benefit from a paid job for several years, however, it helped me greatly in the fact that I chose with the awareness of the least expensive schools (and yes, the least well -known) for both Bachelor's degree and Business Administration Master.

At the time of these decisions, I did not have the slightest idea that my path would lead to the Peace Corps. However, I put a high instructional value to maintain elasticity.

I can withdraw the risks not because I got a special savings account. But because I was not upset religion.

The medium -salary step may not be realistic for many. But the options you make now can allow you Freedom bending later.

Final ideas

I said that joining the Peace Corps was the best job decision.

But in the past, it may have been a set of small decisions in previous years that were “the best decision.”

This is what provided the financial and emotional goodness to take this huge jump from faith.

the next: To become financially independent …
